Analyze Solution page

Measure the absorbance and transmittance versus wavelength for solutions. Set an analysis wavelength for the Concentration and Time pages.

  1. y-axis measurement

Click the displayed measurement to switch between viewing Absorbance and Transmittance on the y-axis.

  2. Data run selector

A new data run appears every time data recording begins. Click to select the data run you want to display. To rename a run, select the run and then click Rename. To delete a run, select the run and then click Remove.

  3. Analysis wavelength

Use this tool to select a wavelength to analyze when performing concentration or reaction rate experiments. To select the wavelength, drag the tool to the wavelength you want to analyze, then click Accept. You can also type a wavelength and press Enter. Click the arrows to adjust the wavelength. To remove the tool, click Remove.

  4. Show second y-axis

Click to show Absorbance and Transmittance simultaneously.

  5. Color spectrum background

Click to show or hide the color spectrum behind the data.

  6. Comparison Mode

Click to show all runs on the graph simultaneously. Click again to only show one run.

  7. Annotation tool

Click to add a note in the graph. The tool can be attached to a data point by dragging the tool to the point. Click the annotation box to enter text.

  8. Coordinates tool

Click to add the tool to the graph. Drag the tool to a data point to view the coordinates of that point.

  9. Scale to fit

Click to automatically scale the axes so that all data is visible in the graph display.

    Tip

You can also scale the graph manually by clicking and dragging the axes or plot area.

  10. Calibrate Reference

This calibration is performed when a reference solution is placed in the spectrometer. The reference solution should be the solvent used to make the sample solutions for an experiment. Insert a reference solution in the spectrometer, then click to calibrate the spectrometer.

  11. Calibrate Dark

This calibration is performed when the spectrometer's light source is turned off. Click to calibrate the spectrometer.

  12. Record

Click to begin data recording. Click Stop to end data recording and keep the displayed data.

  13. Smoothing

This tool uses a Savitzky-Golay filter to smooth the data. Drag the slider to increase or decrease the amount of smoothing. The tool will lock automatically after data is recorded on the Concentration or Time pages, as data can be significantly different for additional trials recorded with a different smoothing setting. If needed, the Smoothing tool can be unlocked by clicking Locked.

  14. Number of Scans to Average

This property specifies the number of discrete acquisitions that are collected and averaged before displaying and recording a spectrum or data point. A higher value results in a better signal-to-noise ratio, making a weak peak signal more visible. Drag the slider to increase or decrease the number of scans.

  15. Fluorescence Tabs (Wireless Spectrometer only)

The Wireless Spectrometer contains a 405 nm and 500 nm LED for use in fluorescence experiments. Use this feature to explore the excitation of substances at two different wavelengths. Click the tab to turn on the LED of the specified wavelength.
