Blackboard

When properly configured, the Blackboard learning management system allows you to import content from PASCO Portal directly into a Blackboard course. This process requires Learning Tools Interoperability (LTI) integration using LTI 1.3. Before teachers in your organization can perform this process, you must set up an LTI 1.3 tool provider in Blackboard with the aid of a PASCO Portal admin. The sections below outline this setup process in detail.

Prerequisites

Before setting up LTI 1.3 on Blackboard, you will need a set of URLs which will be provided by the PASCO Portal admin. The following URLs are required to set up and configure LTI 1.3 on Blackboard:

  • Authentication Request URL
  • Public KeySet URL
  • Redirection URL
  • Deeplinking URL

Register application for LTI 1.3

  1. Log in to the Developer Portal using your admin credentials.

  2. Go to the My Application page, select the Add icon, and choose Manual Registration.

  3. Enter details for the LTI key, as provided by PASCO.

    • Application Name: Enter an appropriate name, such as PASCO Portal
    • Description: Enter an appropriate description
    • Domain(s): Enter portal.pasco.com
    • Group: Select the group of your choice
    • Login Initiation URL: Enter the Authentication Request URL provided by the PASCO admin
    • Tool Redirect URL(s): Enter the Redirection URL and Deeplinking URL provided by the PASCO admin, with the URLs separated by a comma
    • Tool JWKS URL: Enter the Public KeySet URL provided by the PASCO admin
    • Signing Algorithm: Select RS256

    Note

Copy and paste the information provided by the PASCO Portal Admin exactly as is. Any modifications to the information may cause issues with content sharing via LTI.

  4. Enable the option for My Integration supports LTI 1.3.

  5. Select Register Application.

  6. After successfully registering the application, you will be redirected to the Application's Key page. Copy all of the following information and provide it to the PASCO Portal admin:

    • Application ID
    • Issuer
    • Public keyset URL
    • Auth token endpoint
    • OIDC auth request endpoint

    Note

The secret is only shown once. Copy the application key and secret, then store them in a safe and secure location before exiting the page.

  7. Once the PASCO Portal admin has received all information, select Done to return to the My Application page. You can now view the newly created application.

Register LTI tool provider

  1. Log into the registered organization's portal provided by Blackboard.

  2. Navigate to the System Admin page.

  3. Under the Integrations section, select LTI Tool Providers.

  4. Click the Manage Global Properties option, then set the global properties as follows (see the image below):

    • Enabled in Courses: Yes
    • Enabled in Organizations: Yes
    • Creation of Tool Provider Links: Allow links to any tool provider that isn't explicitly excluded
    • Allow configured tool providers to post grades: No
    • Send User Data: Send user data over any connection
    • User Fields to Send: Role in Course, Name, and Email Address
    • Allow Membership Service Access: No
    • Show User Acknowledgement Message: No

When you are finished, select Submit.

  5. To create a new LTI Tool Provider, select Register LTI 1.3/Advantage Tool.

  6. In the Client ID box, enter the Application ID that was generated during the application registration on the Developer Portal (see Step 6 from the previous section). Select Submit.

  7. Review the information associated with the registered Client ID, such as the URLs and keys.

  8. Set up the following information for the LTI Tool Provider:

    • Tool Status: Select Approved
    • User Fields to Send: Select Role in Course, Name, and Email Address
    • Allow grade service access: Select No
    • Allow Membership Service Access: Select Yes

Once you have provided all this information, select Submit to create the LTI Tool Provider.

Once you have created the tool provider, you can view it on the listing page.

Create a placement

  1. Hover over the newly added tool provider name to reveal the options menu. Click the dropdown arrow, then select Manage Placements from the menu.

  2. Select Create Placement to create a new placement for the LTI tool.

  3. Enter the following information:

    • Label: Enter an appropriate name, such as PASCO Portal
    • Handle: Enter an appropriate handle for the placement
    • Availability: Select Yes
    • Type: Select Deep Linking content tool

      Note

Do not select "Allow student access".

    • Target Link URI: Enter the Deeplinking URL provided by the PASCO Portal admin

Once all the information is entered correctly, select Submit to create the placement for the LTI tool.

After these steps are completed, a PASCO Portal admin will need to complete the LTI configuration through Portal before instructors in your district can add content to Blackboard courses.
