STEM connections

In addition to the core content, the Essential Physics textbook contains connections to a wide variety of science, technology, engineering, and mathematics content. This content is distributed throughout the text and can easily be reached via the tools provided in the eBook.

Science connections

The textbook contains a range of science connections, which provide a bridge between the material in a given section and other related science topics. You can easily search for these connections in either of the following ways:

  • To view a list of links to all science connections in the textbook, select the Science icon in the home screen.
  • To view a list of links to all science connections in a specific chapter, navigate to a page in that chapter and select the Science icon in the page navigation bar.

Technology connections

The use of physics in technology is interwoven through most of the content of Essential Physics. You can easily search for these technology connections in either of the following ways:

  • To view a list of links to all technology connections in the textbook, select the Technology icon in the home screen.
  • To view a list of links to all technology connections in a given chapter, navigate to a page in that chapter and select the Technology icon in the page navigation bar.

Note

If a technology connection is found in an extension paragraph, clicking the link to that connection will automatically open the relevant paragraph.

Engineering connections

The textbook contains many connections to engineering applications of the covered topics. You can easily search for these engineering connections in either of the following ways:

  • To view a list of links to all engineering connections in the textbook, select the Engineering icon in the home screen.
  • To view a list of links to all engineering connections in a specific chapter, navigate to a page in that chapter and select the Engineering icon in the page navigation bar.

Note

If an engineering connection is found in an extension paragraph, clicking the link to that connection will automatically open the relevant paragraph.

Math connections

Math is the language of physics, but many courses teach math as an abstraction rather than as a way to describe the real world. Essential Physics addresses the need to reinforce math skills with a variety of math connections. These connections can be found in either of the following ways:

  • To view a list of links to all math connections in the textbook, select the Math icon on the home screen. (This list is particularly useful when collaborating with math teachers.)
  • To view a list of links to all math connections in a specific chapter, navigate to a page in that chapter and click the Math icon in the page navigation bar.

As shown below, the math connections often feature translation diagrams to show how math concepts are applied to specific physics topics.
