Histogram display

Use the Histogram to display the number of counts versus a measurement distributed into bins of a set range.

Histogram tools

  • Scale to Fit Tool

Automatically scale the axes to make all data visible in the histogram.

  • Normalize Data

Normalizes the data so that the total number of counts is equal to 1.

  • Run Selector

Show or hide runs displayed in the histogram. Click the drop-down menu to select which runs are visible.

  • Statistics

Display statistical values of a data run. Select which statistics to display from the drop-down menu.

  • Coordinates Tool

Show the coordinates of a single bin.

  • Create Data Set

Click to create a data set of the current run. You can then select the data set in a Graph display to perform further analysis.

  • Annotation Tool

Add a label to a bin that contains a brief note about the data at that point.

  • Number of Bins

Click Increase Number of Bins to distribute the data in more bins. Click Decrease Number of Bins to distribute the data across fewer bins.

  • Multiple Data Set Display Options

Select an option to display multiple data sets side-by-side , overlayed , or stacked . Side-by-side is selected by default.

  • Remove Active Element

Use to remove tools from the display, such as the coordinates or annotation tools. First click the tool you want to remove, then click the remove button.

Show the data set statistics

Display statistical values including the most probable value, mean value, root mean squared (RMS) value, standard deviation, and the total number of counts. Capstone displays the values visually on the histogram, with the digital value in an information box.

  1. Click the Statistics tool. All statistics appear by default.

    Note

If the statistics are not visible, click on the run in the legend to select the run.

  2. Click the down arrow next to Statistics to select or deselect which statistics are visible.

  3. Drag the information boxes to a more convenient location, if needed.

Add a curve fit to the data

Using the Data Set tool, you can extract the data from the Histogram display and view it in a Graph display. This allows you to analyze the Histogram data using the curve fit tool in the Graph display.

  1. In the histogram toolbar, click Create Data Set .
  2. In the Displays panel, double-click Graph to add a graph display to the workbook page.
  3. On the graph's y-axis, click <Select Measurement>, then select Counts of Count Rate under Histogram. Count Rate Bins is automatically selected in the x-axis.
  4. To remove the lines connecting the data, right-click a data point in the graph and de-select Show Connecting Lines.
  5. In the graph toolbar, click the down arrow next to the Curve Fit tool, then select a curve from the list. Gaussian is likely a good choice.

Display multiple runs

The histogram displays one run at a time by default. You can display multiple runs in the histogram using the run selector. Capstone provides three options for displaying multiple runs.

  1. In the histogram toolbar, click the Run Selector tool to turn on multiple-run visibility mode.
  2. Click the down arrow next to the run selector, then select which runs you want to display from the menu.
  3. The side-by-side display option is selected by default in the toolbar. You can also select overlay data sets or stack data sets .
